Travel insurance: 7 Essential Things To Look Out For

admin | May 01, 2011 | 0 comments

If you have never bought travel insurance or were faced with insufficient insurance coverage before, there are essential things that you need to consider before you purchase your first or next travel insurance policy. Having your holiday ruined and being forced to make additional expenses for medical treatment or to replace the loss of your valuables is indeed a traveller’s nightmare. Before you purchase travel insurance, you should study the policy carefully and choose the right coverage for your travel needs.

Below are 7 essential things that you need to consider:

1. Flight cancellation reimbursement

To have your flight cancelled and your holidays disrupted due to catastrophic reasons such as volcanic activity can be disappointing. In order to avoid financial loss, you should check that the policy covers the following:

  • amount of cover provided is enough to reimburse you for the cost of your holiday.
  • reimbursement if you cancel your flight for a valid reason and find out under what circumstances it will do so
  • reimbursement if the travel agency you book with cancels the holiday and under what circumstances
  • reimbursement for airline failure
  • reimbursement for cancellation due to natural disasters
  • reimbursement for curtailment and under what circumstances

2. Compensation for delays and missed departure

It is important to ensure that you’ll be reimbursed if your flight is delayed and that you’ll be protected financially against missed departure, especially for connecting flights. Flight delays are common occurrences and such misadventures are inconveniences that every traveller will have to put up with at one point of his or her travel.

3. Baggage cover

Baggage cover is an essential part of the travel insurance policy as it ensures that your stolen or lost luggage is replaced if the unforeseen happens. You should check that the policy you’re looking for provides enough cover for the things you are going to take with you for your trip. In addition, you should seek relevant cover in case your baggage is delayed on either your outward or home-bound journey.

4. Medical bills and repatriation

A huge portion of your expenditure will be spent on medical treatment if you fall ill or get injured during your holidays. That is why medical cover forms a central part of the majority of travel insurance policies. If you choose the right cover, your transportation to the nearest hospital or back to Australia for emergency treatment will be covered.

5. Cover for winter sports and water sports

Never make the assumption that you’ll be covered for water or winter sports such as surfing, kayaking and skiing. Check the fine print to make sure that the sport you’ll be involved in is covered in the policy. If the activity you’ll be involved in is listed under exclusion and if you happen to injure yourself, you will be left footing the medical bill.

6. Excess

As with most forms of insurance there is usually an excess to pay on any claim you make. These excesses can usually be lowered if you pay a little extra to make your premium a little cheaper.

7. Hidden exclusions

Sometimes, the most important details are found in fine print, so don’t overlook it. Invest some time in reading through the exclusions so that you are aware of what is covered and what is not and under what circumstances.

Leaving for your holidays and feeling safe with an insurance policy without studying it carefully is not a smart move. Ensure that you have chosen the right cover and are sufficiently covered for your holiday before you purchase a policy. This will prevent the horror of having to fund extra expenses due to insufficient coverage or neglect by failing to read the exclusions in the fine print.  Look out for the 8 essential things mentioned above as a guide before you purchase your next travel insurance.
